The local police claim to have arrested the kingpin of 'Kala Mann Gang' on Wednesday, with the arrest of Gurmeet Singh alias Kala Mann. The suspect has been a municipal councillor of Dhanuala. More thanb 40 cases of robbery and murders have been registered at different police stations against Gurmeet.
Senior superintendent of police Snehdeep Sharma said acting on a tip-off, the police had set up a special check-post near Kotdhuna village in Dahaula, 15 km from the town.
SSP Sharma said the police signaled two motorcycle borne youths coming from Bhiki side to stop. "However, as soon as he sighted the police, Kala Dhanuala, who was riding pillion tried to escape, but was nabbed." The police also arrested the driver Davinder Singh.
The police have recovered 32 bore pistol and 9 mm pistols along with eight cartridges, besides 11 mobile sets of different companies, three driving licenses, voter card and ATM cards from the duo's possession.
On October 15, Kala Mann accompanied by his wife and other accomplices fired several shots at the police team near Patran in Patiala, when the police signaled his vehicle to stop. The gang has been active in Sangrur, Barnala, Mansa and Moga district and had been on the most-wanted list of many police stations.
"Several cases of murders, attempts to murder, robberies and violations of the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act have been registered against Kala Mann in almost every district in the state," the SSP said.
Gurmeet also kidnapped a clerk with the municipal council and had beaten him severely. He was elected a councillor in this term also, but his membership was terminated on the grounds of indiscipline.
