Kisan Mela

The Young Farmers' Association of Patiala on Friday organised a Kisan Mela in Rakhra village in which a large number of farmers took part and discussed their problems with experts.

Inaugurating the mela, consul general of Canada at Chandigarh, Scot Slessar, exhorted the young farmers to adopt farming as their prime job as farming, if adopted well, was one of the most profitable businesses of the world.

He disclosed that the Canada government has recently signed a memorandum of understanding with Punjab and Haryana governments to open National Agriculture and Food Bio-technology institute at Mohali.

“The Canada government is keen to share its ideas with farmers of Punjab and Haryana, and I hope this institute will go a long way in resolving the farming issues of both India and Canada. The institute will prove to be boon for the farmers of both the countries,” said Slessar.

He suggested the Punjab government to take benefit of dairy farming being done in Canada and propel the Punjab farmers to increase milk production.

“Across the globe, we have done marvelous work in dairy farming. Punjab, if wants, can request Canada government to work jointly in this field,” he said.

He said the Canada government, very soon, would organise an international fair for young farmers which would be a platform to share ideas for young farmers.

Mangal Singh Sandhu, director agriculture, said, “The department of agriculture will open kisan huts, being started under Agriculture Technology Management Agency (ATMA) project. This will be started across the state.”
