The recently-concluded kisan mela has left the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) campus littered with garbage. The students of the university have criticised the authorities for their ignorant behaviour and alleged that it was a routine to see the campus in a messy state post any event.
The students also pointed out that the authorities did not provide dustbins near the eating kiosks, leaving the visitors with no option than to litter the campus.
“We agree that the venue gets littered after hosting such big events, but it’s the authorities’ duty to ensure that the venue is cleaned up post the event. But here, the authorities wait for the media to highlight the issue or the students to form unions to get the campus cleaned. This has been a routine now,” said a group of students, adding that such instances was a “slap on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s swachh bharat abhiyaan”.
“People should make sure that they do not litter the venue. Finding dustbins on the premises is not that tough. It’s just that the visitors need to walk a bit, which I think they should have done. At the end of the end, it’s we who should be taking care of our land. PAU being a big campus, takes time to be cleaned,” said a few professors of the university.
Meanwhile, the university’s estate officer Vishavjit Hans could not be contacted for his comments.
