Sunil Kumar Jyoti, 50, will be the fifth mayor of Jalandhar since the civic body got corporation status in 1992. This is his second consecutive term as councillor. He lives in Kishanpura locality with his wife and son.

Sunil Kumar Jyoti, 50, will be the fifth mayor of Jalandhar since the civic body got corporation status in 1992. This is his second consecutive term as councillor. He lives in Kishanpura locality with his wife and son.

Jyoti is a close confidant of local MLA KD Bhandari; in fact they are childhood friends as they used to play cricket together.

He has been associated with the BJP since 1977.

A graduate, Jyoti owns an industrial unit in the city that manufactures conveyor chains used in sugar mills.

Known for his humorous nature, Jyoti is popular among his friends.

Major challenges before him

As MC is facing financial crunch, it will be quite a task to arrange for funds for development. Corruption is prevalent within the MC.

Mayor has to strike the right balance with local bodies minister and chief parliamentary secretary KD Bhandari, MLA Manoranjan Kalia and SAD leaders.

Overcoming opposition by employees' unions to MC's pending door-to-door garbage collection projects.

Completion of work on the sports hub.
