Giving impetus to electioneering process in United Cycle and Parts Manufacturers Association (UCPMA), another faction declared incumbent president Gurmit Singh Kular's candidature for the president's post.
In presence of several cycle industrialists, the faction led by KK Seth, chief managing director, Neelam Cycles, declared Kular as candidate for top post and Rajeev Jain for the post of general secretary. The house also authorised Kular and Jain to form a five-member committee to declare candidates for the remaining six seats of office-bearers in association.
Meanwhile, though Kular in his invitation to association members had mentioned the name of former association president DS Chawla among the people to be present during meeting, Chawla conspicuously remained absent giving rise to speculations about his strategy for the polls. Seth, however, defended Chawla's absence claiming that he remained absent due to some personal matter, but was with the group.
While addressing the gathering of industry people, Kular counted the achievements made by the association during two years of his tenure as president and assured them to work for the betterment of the whole industry.
He said the opposite camp was making plight of smaller industry a poll issue, whereas the association had succeeded in resolving many issues being faced by the smaller industry.
Seth said the other camp was wrongly campaigning that the election was between big manufacturers and small manufacturers, and said they would contest polls on issues, which would help the industry grow.
He said if the group was voted to govern, the association would work for imposing safeguard duty on import of cycles and parts from China to protect the local industry and would also press for abolition of 2% central excise duty on cycles.
Seth added that his team would raise the demand of setting up of a Focal Point for expansion of industry.
On the other hand, when contacted, Chawla said right now he was out of city, but expressed that he was not taken into confidence for the announcement of candidate for general secretary. He demanded that the candidature of Jain on this seat should be withdrawn.
“I had agreed for Kular's name on president's seat but neither was I kept in loop for announcement of candidates on Sunday nor for name on general secretary's seat. I will sit with my group and take a decision on further action and will express the resentment on the development,” he said.
The resentment expressed by Chawla might hamper the constitution of whole team of Kular group as he is not in support of some other probable candidates from the group also. The elections for eight posts of office-bearers of the UCPMA will be held on September 14.
As many as 2,215 members will cast their votes.
The other group has declared Charanjit Singh Vishivkarma as candidate on president's post.
