The local police have arrested a 19-year-old labourer for allegedly driving his wife to suicide by suspecting her fidelity.

The accused has been identified as Mohammad Rafiq of Kartar Nagar.

He was arrested following the complaint of the victim's father Mohammad Khalid.

Khalid told the police that his daughter, Khalida, 18, married Rafiq three months ago, adding that since they got married Rafiq used to suspect Khalida's fidelity and used to deter her from visiting her parents.

Therefore, depressed over the harassment by her husband, she hanged herself on Monday evening, Khalid alleged.

Inspector Gurdev Singh, station house officer (SHO) at Model Town police station, said the accused wanted to flee from the city, but the police arrested him. A case under section 306 (abetment to suicide) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered against him.

The police will produce Rafiq before the court on Wednesday.
