A labourer was arrested for attempting to rape the eight-year-old daughter of his neighbour in Janakpuri area on Tuesday afternoon.

The accused has been identified as Ram Jivan alias Uday, 25, a native of Hardoi of Uttar Pradesh. He had been living in Janakpuri for the past one year.

According to the victim, the accused had been molesting her for the past few days.

In her complaint to police, the victim's mother said she left for work in the morning. She returned around 1pm to prepare lunch for her children. When she entered the house, she was shocked to see Jivan trying to rape her daughter.

She raised an alarm following which Jivan fled the spot. The woman then informed her husband and approached the police with a complaint.

Sub-inspector Rajwant Pal Singh, incharge at Janakpuri police post, said a case under section 376/511 (attempt to rape) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) was registered against the accused.
