A 21-year-old labourer was killed after an under-construction dome of a temple collapsed in Mayapuri of Haibowal on Wednesday.
Two other labourers suffered severe injuries in the incident and were admitted to Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), where their condition is stated to be critical.
The deceased, Daber, hailed from Kampla village of Tehri in Odisha. He was living with his uncle, Rabidas, who is a construction contractor and had got the contract for construction of Sidhi Vinayak Mandir in Mayapuri of Haibowal.
Inspector Ram Pal, station house officer (SHO), Division Number 4 police station, said the labourers were working on the dome of the four-storey temple. Labourers Bharat and Ganesh were carving, while Daber was standing on the ground floor to supply the construction material to them.
But the dome collapsed all of a sudden, throwing Bharat and Ganesh to the ground and burying Daber under the debris.
Other labourers raised an alarm, following which locals came forward and initiated the rescue operation. Meanwhile, police and a fire brigade team also reached there and rescued the trio from the debris. The victims were rushed to DMCH, where Daber succumbed to injuries.
The Division Number 4 police have initiated investigation to ascertain the cause of the mishap. The deceased's kin, who live in Odisha, have been informed of the mishap. They have left for Ludhiana.
The SHO said that the police would take action after recording the statement of other labourers and kin of the deceased.
Ravinandan Sharma, president of the mandir committee, said contractor Rabidas was looking after the work of construction of domes of the temple and had arranged the labourers.
