Haphazard-parked vehicles

Haphazard-parked vehicles and extensive encroachments on roads is a common sight at all places in the city. Extensive traffic jams and inadequate parking areas have further worsened the condition, which causes inconvenience to not only the residents in city, but officials as well.

Talking about the busiest roads in city, that includes Mall Road, Ferozpur Road and Pakhowal Road, a large number of shops, malls and restaurants are situated here, but again sufficient parking spaces are not available.

The passport office (adjoining Preet Palace) though has a provision for parking, but remains inadequate, as the parking area starts getting occupied from around 8.30am and till 12 in the afternoon it is fully occupied. As a result, people park their vehicle haphazardly, forcing police to take away their vehicles, which causes hindrance for the on going traffic.

Pakhowal Road: The road houses famous restaurants, hotels, bakeries, hospitals, apparel shops and other places. Though it has several boards embedded on the sides, cautioning people about the tow away area, but lack of sufficient parking area results in towing away of their vehicles. Absence of a yellow line on roads indicating parking limit, ends up in landing people in a problem, as they fail to identify the limit.
Harinder Singh, a costumer visiting a shop on Pakhowal Road said, "Most of the time, I have to park my vehicle at a far away place from the shop. This is problematic and the authorities should do something about it."
Tejinder Singh, the owner of Big and Meats restaurant said, "Our business suffers a lot due to improper parking spaces. The authorities should either provide a proper parking area, which is common for the whole Pakhowal road or should mark the road properly to facilitate costumers."
The problem arises also because the restaurant owners cater to people in their cars parked in the middle of the road.

Mall Road: The parking place is fully occupied at the favourite place for brand-conscious people. Lack of places allotted by shops to park vehicles forces people to park them in front of residential areas on the road. Besides, wrong parking in front of malls and in the middle of the road is a common sight here.

Ferozpur Road: This is the only road with maximum number of renowned hotels and shopping malls in the city. MBD Neopolis and SRS cinema are located here.
Both these places again suffer from wrong parking problems especially during evening hours. The authorities at the MBD Neopolis Mall, however, claim that they have proper parking space.
"We request people to park their vehicles inside the mall, but people don't listen," a security guard at MBD Neopolis Mall said.

On Wednesday, Silver Arc mall situated on Ferozepur Road placed barricades to impede parking even inside the parking zone, which annoyed people and forced them to park at wrong places.
Manjit Singh, head constable, traffic police said, "We tow away around 12-15 vehicles everyday. But instead of all this, people should try to understand the problem and make use of parking places provided by the malls."
