Kingpin of the notorious Lala gang, Sukhwinder Singh Lala, 35, was shot dead allegedly by members of the rival Harpuria gang on the Dera Baba Nanak road railway overbridge, near the residence of the senior superintendent of police (SSP) on Saturday night.
Lala, who was involved in more than a dozen criminal cases, was out on bail. Sources said, Lala, along with his two nephews was returning from a health club, when members of the Harpuria came in an SUV and fired three bullets at him from a point-blank range, killing him on the spot.
Six months earlier, members of the Harpuria gang and Lala gang had exchanged gunfire in which Golu Harpuria was injured. “The attack could have been to take revenge,” said a police official.
Police have registered a case under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code against Golu, Pavitar, Arun, Sarj, alias Mintu, and Parri on the complaint of Lala’s father Tersem Singh. “The police have formed six teams to nab the accused,” said SSP Deepak Hilori.
