On reaching the hospital, PPCC general secretary Lalli Majithia was taken to the emergency ward and administered oxygen immediately.

The doctors continued administering oxygen on him and his condition is being closely monitored. He is a heart patient.

Meanwhile, the other Congress leaders who were taken in custody by the police were kept at a local police station for two hours. They were let off in the evening. No case was registered against them.

Amritsar (rural) DCC chief Gurjeet Singh Aujla has briefed PPCC chief Partap Singh Bajwa about the incident in Amritsar. Aujla said the protests against Majithia would continue and Bajwa will take a decision in this regard soon.

Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) chief Partap Singh Bajwa strongly condemned the lathicharge by police on Congress workers in Amritsar who were holding demonstration against cabinet minister Bikram Majithia.

In a statement, Bajwa said, "Congress workers were beaten up without any provocation. The party would continue the protests till the time chief minister does not order CBI inquiry into the drug racket."
