If you swear by the laboratory test reports of the health department, Bathinda is safest place to buy sweets, especially during the festive season. Laboratory reports of the sweets' samples collected by the health department during the festive season last year found no adulteration.

In October and November, the health officials swoop on sweets shops to check adulteration. The district health department conducted seven raids during the last festival season and collected 50 samples of various items for laboratory testing. Of the 50 samples, 19 were those of sweets, 4 of milk, 4 of ghee and 8 of mustard oil.

Interestingly, all 19 samples of sweets cleared the purity test. Mustard oil was the only commodity to have failed the test.

When asked about the method to collect samples, district health officer (DHO), Dr RS Randhawa, said, "We have collected samples even from sub-urban areas which were sent to a government laboratory and all were cleared. During the festive season, we act strictly check adulteration."

"This year, we stopped taking samples of sweets last Friday because we have to collect other samples also,"said Randhawa.

When this correspondent asked a resident, Harkirat Singh, about the laboratory reports, he said he would believe his taste buds more than the laboratory reports. "How can we trust these laboratory reports? They are made public when the public had already consumed the commodities,"said Inderjeet Kaur, another resident of Bathinda.
