In the latest incident of lawlessness in the tricity, three unidentified men fired two shots at advocate, Harkishan Singh, 36, in broad daylight in Sector 76. Singh, who had a miraculous escape, stays in Phase-5 and practices at the district courts in SAS Nagar.

He was on his way to the court, on his scooter, at about 10am on Friday when the three accused, on a Swift Dzire, waylaid him on the road near the court complex.

Sources said after intercepting Singh’s two-wheeler, one of the accused got down from the car and tried to hit him with an iron rod. However, Singh ducked and the rod hit the scooter. Then they fired two shots that also missed him.

Police have recovered shells of the 32-bore pistol from the spot and registered a case of attempt to murder against the three people, who are absconding.

In his statement, Singh had told the police that he suspected the role of some of his relatives behind the attack as they had issued threats to him over a divorce case in the family.

“We are investigating the matter and confirming whether the shots were fired from a licensed or an unlicensed weapon. We are checking CCTVs installed around private offices for clues. A case has been registered under Section 307 (attempt to murder and Arms Act against unidentified people,” said Sohana station house officer (SHO) Rajan Parminder Singh.

“The victim has given us the names of people he suspects and we will zero in on them soon. So far, no arrest has been made yet,” he added.

The incident in Sector 76 came less than 12 hours after a Sector127 Kharar residential society’s top office-bearer and his accomplices fired in the air after a drinking session in the middle of the night on Thursday around midnight.

In this case, society residents had been complaining about several illegal activities by these goons for weeks, but no action was taken.
