The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Ludhiana, on Tuesday, held a silent protest over the incident of gangrape with a hotel staffer on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday. This protest was held outside the police commissioner's office and a silent march was carried out from there towards the deputy commissioner's office.
AAP district convener Ahbaab Singh Grewal said this protest was held to highlight the increasing number of rapes and other crimes against women in the city as well as the state. The AAP team handed over a memorandum to Ludhiana police commissioner demanding immediate arrest of the remaining accused. They said instead of deploying police personnel on VIP duties, they should be deployed in way so as to secure the general public and women in particular.
AAP also demanded that the police be sensitised to make them realise that the security of common man is as important as that of VIPs'. Various other demands regarding women safety were also submitted in the memorandum. The others who were present in the protest were HS Cheema, advocate Varinder Khara, Colonel CM Lakhanpal, Colonel Darshan Singh Dhillon, Amritpal Singh and Davinder Singh Grewal.
