Ldh infant deaths: SMO, paediatrician transferred

Following the inquiry report submitted by the Ludhiana deputy commissioner on the death of newborns and the stillbirths at the Mother Child Hospital here, the health department on Wednesday transferred senior medical officer (SMO) Dr RK Karkara and Dr Yogesh Khanna, paediatrician, at Lord Mahavira civil hospital.

The transfer orders were released by principal secretary health Vini Mahajan.

Dr Karkara has been transferred to the community health centre (CHC), Sahnewal, and Dr Khanna to CHC, Machhiwara.

CHC Sahnewal SMO Dr Parvinderpal Singh Sidhu will replace Dr Karkara and Machhiwara CHC paediatrician Dr Renu Gupta will replace Dr Khanna at Lord Mahavira civil hospital.

The inquiry report submitted by deputy commissioner Rajat Agarwal on December 2 had found Dr Karkara guilty of inefficient supervision and Dr Khanna guilty in one case of death of the newborn.

Dr Alka Mittal, gynaecologist on duty, has already been suspended. Health minister Surjit Kumar Jyani had said that she would be chargesheeted, but no chargesheet has reached the civil surgeon’s office yet.
