With the comeback of former Punjab chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh by winning the most prestigious Amritsar Lok Sabha seat by a huge margin and having been appointed deputy leader of the party in the Lok Sabha, winds seem to be blowing in favour of him among Congress leaders of the state now.
This was observed at a meeting of the district-level party leaders here on Saturday when most of them were all praise for Amarinder. No word was uttered about Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) chief Partap Singh Bajwa.
The leaders, including former MLA Vijay Sathi, for mer district Congress presidents Dr Tara Singh Sandhu, Col Babu Singh, SGPC member Sukhjit Singh Kaka Lohgarh, for mer Youth Congress president Hari Singh Khai , city Congress president Upinder Singh Gill, Sewak Singh Saidoke, block president of Nihal Singh Wala, senior Congress leader Nanak Singh Chaudhary and state committee member of PPCC Inderjeet Singh BirChrik , hailed Captain’s appointment as deputy leader in the Lok Sabha one after another. No one talked about Bajwa. District Congress Committee president Darshan Singh Brar was conspicuous by his absence. The leaders waited for him for about an hour but the top leader of the district failed to come to the meeting.
When contacted by the HT, DCC president Darshan Singh Brar said, “I had taken appointment with my doctor, so I could not attend the meeting.”
On the gover nment drive against drug peddlers in the state, the leaders said that the police had ar rested only the drug addicts and small-time peddlers but no bigwigs have been caught.
They said deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal was saying that no political kingpin was involved in the drug trade, but the reality was written on the wall.
