Activists of Left parties, including the CPI, CPI(M), the CPI Punjab and the CPM(ML), on Tuesday, held a dharna in front of the mini-secretariat here against the Prevention of Damage to Private and Public Property Act 2014, which they termed a 'black law' besides other issues.

"The Punjab Prevention Of Private And Public Property Bill 2014 is against peaceful protests because under this Act, even a head constable can arrest the protesters. The leaders of the protesters can be booked on frivolous grounds of damaging the private or public property and it snatches away the right to protest from the trade unions and others," said Pawanpreet Singh, district secretary of the CPI.

"On the one hand, prices of all items are rising, education is getting costlier, the youth are being pushed towards drugs, farmers and workers are committing suicides, but, instead of solving these problems, the government is passing such laws to stop people from expressing their dissent and hold pretests which is a democratic right of every citizen," said the communist leaders, addressing a huge gathering at the dharna.
Comrade Raghunath Singh and Jagroop Singh demanded to strengthen the public distribution system,

withdrawing the black Act, control on the prices of sand and gravel, fixing prices of agricultural products according to the Swaminathan commission report and increasing the old- age pension to Rs 3,000 per month.
