The Lehragaga municipal council has come under the scanner after it opted to fill the land meant for the construction of a stadium with garbage instead of sand.

The matter came to light when the locals complained about a foul smell emanating from the construction site after the contractor, who has been assigned the task to fill up the land with sand, dumped heaps of garbage there.

SAD general secretary Prem Singh Chandumajra had laid the foundation stone of the stadium in 2011 on the place where once was a pond used for drainage purpose.

According to information, the work of the stadium resumed after the Lehragaga civic body got its new president two months ago.

Sources in the civic body said the contract for the stadium's construction had been allotted to the local authorities, who started dumping the garbage for filling up the land instead of sand.

"Garbage trolleys have been brought from the solid waste plant at Kotara village near here at the behest of civic body authorities. The contractor would later dump sand on the garbage, befooling the department concerned to seek hefty money on the pretext of filling the land with sand," said an official of the civic body.

"Unhygienic conditions prevail around the site as besides giving out a foul smell, garbage heaps have become breeding ground for mosquitoes posing threat to locals," said Maninder Singh, a local.

MC president Balwinder Kaur was not available for comment.

SDM Subhash Chander said they had not received a written complaint in the matter.

"Though we were aware of the matter, but will take action only after receiving a written complaint," he said.
