The 39th edition of All-India Liberals Hockey Tournament, one of the oldest national hockey championships in the country, will commence at Punjab Public School at Nabha in this district on Sunday.
The tournament is being organised every year since 1976 without any break. On the opening day of the seven-day championship, North-West Academy, Moga, will face Azad Hockey Club, Haryana in the inaugural match, while in another match Sangrur Hockey Academy will play against Himachal Pradesh XI, Shimla.
As many as 26 teams of various academies, clubs, public departments and security forces will participate in the tournament.
This tournament has recognised as grade-A tournament by the Hockey India and serves as a key platform for hocky players to showcase their talent.
However, the state government has failed to provide any financial assistance and infrastructure support to this nationally-acclaimed tournament to take the event to another level.
Though politicians make big promises every year about setting up an astro turf for the tournament, but they have so far failed to keep their promises.
"Though astro turf is the need of the hour, but we are happy that we have been managing to organise the tournament on grass fields ever since its commencement around four decades ago", said one of the organisers.
