Lift irrigation project sanctioned for Kandi

The Punjab Government is launching first-of-its kind lift irrigation project in the state in the Kandi area of Hoshiarpur district for irrigation purposes. Chief parliamentary secretary Sohan Singh Thandal said that the pilot project would incur a cost of Rs 31.58 crore which would facilitate 14 villages. If the trial succeeded, more such projects would be launched in other parts of the state, he added.

"It is an initiative to provide assure irrigation facilities to farmers, living in the tough terrain of Kandi and help them reap profits," said Thandal.

He added that the that first instalment of Rs 6.38 crore had been released and claimed that 700 acres of land would be irrigated with the launch of the lift irrigation project.

Explaining the mechanism, he that water would be lifted from the Kandi canal, collected in the tanks built nearby and after desilting, stored in the 70-feet high water tank. This stored water would be used for drip irrigation, he added. The project work had been allocated to ZEN irrigation company which would maintain the service for seven years, he said.
