Residents visiting the municipal corporation’s Zone D office are being put to a great deal of inconvenience of having to climb the stairs as the elevators have remained out of order for the past several months.
The hassles don’t end there. The absence of a ramp in the building has further added to the discomfort of physically handicapped visitors.
As a matter of fact many senior citizens and handicapped people have now begun to avoid making a trip to the MC office as they are unable to go up the stairs.
An employee at the office said the elevators had not been functioning for a long time. “Flower pots have been placed in front of the elevator doors just to let visitors know they aren’t working”, he added.
All this time civic officials have preferred to keep pretending the problem doesn’t exist, leave alone doing something about it.
Said Paramjeet Singh, a 61-year-old local: “Earlier I used to visit the office regularly, but I’ve stopped going there now as I find climbing up all those stairs a painful experience. The authorities concerned should get the elevators working again immediately, but I’m skeptical whether anything will be done soon”.
“I’m 59 and find it excruciatingly difficult to climb up the stairs every time I visit the office. It’s high time the elevators are repaired,” said Gurcharan Kaur, another resident.
When contacted, municipal commissioner Pradeep Aggarwal could only say the civic body would soon get going on fixing the elevators. However, he conveniently failed to say when.
