A man died while his son and two others sustained injuries during a scuffle between villagers and employees of a liquor contractor during a raid at a village in Zira sub-division of the district.

Reports said a team of the excise department along with staff of a private liquor contractor raided Bhoope Walaa village, 6 km from Makhu. During the raid, the team reached the house of Mohinder Singh where a scuffle took place which turned violent. Mohinder allegedly opened gunfire causing injuries to Chinder Pal and Gurinder Pal, employees of the contractor.

Mohinder and his son Lakhwinder also sustained injuries. While Mohinder died on the way to the Zira civil hospital, Lakhwinder was admitted there.

Chinder and Gurinder were admitted to the Government Medical College, Faridkot. Later on, villagers reached the Makhu police station and demanded stern action against the contractor and others responsible for Mohinder’s death. Ferozepur SSP Gurpeet Singh Toor said they had recorded the statement of all involved in the incident. SP (D) Amarjit Singh asked to probe the matter, he said.

Mohinder and Lakhwinder were booked in several cases in the past too, said the SSP.
