A bar owner was beaten up and kidnapped for a day allegedly by liquor contractors from Patiala’s Anardana Chowk on Wednesday night.

The attackers were escorted by police and an excise department official was also accompanying them, alleged eyewitness. Kulwinder Singh, who runs a beer bar in the area, has been booked for selling “illicit” liquor. However, area shopkeepers said he had been implicated.

Kulwinder has been admitted to Rajindra hospital. Kotwali SHO Gurpreet Singh said the excise department raided Kulwinder’s bar and found that he was serving illicit liquor.

“We have recorded his statement and investigation is on, said the SHO. However, press secretary of traders union Jagdish Singh said: “Even if he was selling illicit liquir, no one has the right to beat him up and keep hostage for a day. Liquor mafia is operating in Patiala under political patronage.”
