Less than two weeks of recovering poppy husk from brother of the Youth Akali Dal’s joint secretary, the Mansa police on Monday evening recovered boxes of Indian and foreign made liquor from an aide of the YAD leader and arrested a driver of a local councillor.
Even as police see no hand of the Akali Dal in it, the Congress candidate from Bathinda had complained to the Election Commission of India accusing the police of trying to protect a Mansa councillor who allegedly supplied the liquor.
In Bathinda, one of the 15 hyper-sensitive constituencies in the country, the police late on Monday arrested one Atma Singh, a driver of Shiromani Akali Dal’s councillor from Mansa Atamjit Singh Kala, and recovered five liquor boxes (each box containing 12 bottles) from the car of the councillor.
Another accused, Balwinder Kumar of Mansa is a veterinary doctor posted at Ubbha village and is considered close to YAD joint secretary Nirwair Singh. The police failed to nab Kumar but recovered 10 boxes of liquor stored at Solitaire, Ralla Colony.
The Congress candidate from Bathinda, Manpreet Badal had filed a complaint with the Election Commission of India accusing the administration of being hand-in-glove with the SAD-BJP alliance.
Jaijeet Singh Johal, Congress in-charge for Mansa district and brother-in-law of Manpreet, said, “Mansa councillor Atamjit Singh Kala was taken into custody by police after he was seen distributing liquor in Gandhi Basti by Congress workers but later a case was registered against his driver.”
Mansa SSP Bikrampal Singh Bhatti said, “One of the accused is at large and he will be arrested soon.”
