How can the police deter smuggling of illicit liquor, if liquor vend employees are themselves involved in the malpractice.
The anti-liquor smuggling wing of the police commissionerate has arrested a man and recovered eight boxes of illicit liquor from his possession. The accused was carrying liquor in his car. The police have confiscated the car too.
The accused identified as Ram Kumar alias Rana, of New Janta Nagar, works as a salesman at a liquor vend in Dugri.
According to sub-inspector Harbans Singh, in charge of the anti-liquor smuggling wing, the police had put up a naka near the civil hospital following a tip-off.
When the police tried to stop a car coming from Jagraon Bridge for checking, the driver tried to flee from the spot. However, the police gave him a chase and nabbed him.
The accused has admitted that he procured illicit wine from Jodhan village and was going to deliver the contraband to one Bobby of Kashmir Nagar. He had bought a box for Rs 1,600 and was going to sell it for Rs 3,600 per box.
The accused was produced before the additional excise and taxation commissioner, who slammed a fine of Rs 45,000 on him.
