Police have arrested a live-in couple on charge of kidnapping a two-and-a-half-year-old girl and trying to sell her to an issueless couple.

Daba police of Ludhiana police commissionerate arrested the duo from Rama Mandi Chowk in Jalandhar following a tip-off on Friday and recovered the girl from their possession.

The accused have been identified as Baljit Singh and Kulwinder Kaur. Baljit has a criminal record and many cases of burglary have been registered against him.

Kulwinder has been living with him for the past seven years, after reportedly deserting her husband and children, in Gobind Nagar area of Daba in a rented accommodation.

They had abducted the victim Tanya, daughter of a labourer Basant Ram on Thursday. He had lodged a case against the accused in the Daba police station.

Basant alleged that Kulwinder was playing with Tanya on Thursday and suddenly disappeared from the place. When she did not come back, he sounded the police.

According to Jatinder Jit Singh, SHO of the Daba police station, the police had lodged an FIR and launched a manhunt. Later, they got a tip-off about the accused.
