Locals submitted a memorandum to the additional deputy commissioner on Tuesday for shifting of a liquor shop at Thales Bagh locality here, which is situated close to two religious places and a school. The memorandum was addressed to district collector Arshdeep Singh Thind.

Social worker Jagjit Singh Saroy said, “The liquor shop is situated within 100-metre radius of a gurdwara, a temple, a school and a public park as well. Locals want it to be moved to some other location.”

As per the rules, there should be no liquor shop within 100metre radius of a religious or an educational institute. However, locals said this liquor shop had been operating here for the past many years.

Saroy said, “Locals had asked the liquor shop owner to shift it to some other place, however, he refused to do so.”

The liquor shop is situated within 100- metre radius of Shahi Samadha Gurdwara, Mansa Devi Temple, Prem Sabha Shishu Niketan Public School and BSNL Park. Saroy further said, “A meat shop is also being run inside the same liquor shop by the owner. I have tried to contact the councillor of the ward in this regard but nothing has been done to correct this wrong till now”.

He added, “Drunkards create nuisance in the nearby park and harass women after consuming liquor at the shop.”

Saroy runs a two-wheeler repair shop near the liquor shop.

He said if the administration did not take any steps to shift the liquor shop, they would observe a shutdown of the market and protest till their demands were fulfilled.
