Over 3,000 Tibetans including monks, nuns and followers of Tibetan Buddhism belonging to five different associations - the Belgium Tibetan Association, Chidrel Tsogpa. Dhasa Tsongpa Community, Lhasa Community and Lokha Community - took part in a “long-life prayer” ceremony for the Dalai Lama in the Tsuglakhang temple courtyard in McLeodganj early on Wednesday morning.
Sikoyng (Tibetan PM-in-exile) Lobsang Sangay, former PM-in-exile Samdhong Rinpoche, speaker of the exiled Tibetan parliament Penpa Tsering and various Tibetan MPs and ministers-in-exile also participated in the prayer. “Today is the 14th day of the first lunar month of the Tibetan calendar and is dedicated to the Dalai Lama. The five associations of Tibetan people organized the ceremony and people belonging to Lhasa, the capital of Tibet, those coming from southern Tibet and as well as those residing in Belgium and Dharamsala participated in the event,” said Tsering.
“This was the second 'long-life prayer' ceremony for the Dalai Lama after he turned 80. Tibetans consider his 80th birthday as very important,” he added.
