Controversial lottery trader Jagjit Singh Chawla alias Bittu Chawla was arrested for allegedly thrashing a man and passing remarks about his caste on late Monday night.

The police on Tuesday produced the accused before the court that remanded him in one-day police custody.
In his complaint, Arun Vaid, a resident of Janakpuri, had alleged that he was standing outside Chawla's lottery shop in the area on Sunday, when the latter indulged in an altercation with him.

Soon, a scuffle ensued, and Chawla and his aides assaulted him besides passing remarks about his caste, he alleged.

Taking note of the complaint, police raided Chawla's shop on Monday and found him consuming liquor there.
Police said Chawla misbehaved with the raiding party and managed to flee the spot. However, he returned in the evening when the cops managed to nab him.

It is pertinent to mention here that Chawla in the early 2000's had conducted a sting operation on police officials and captured them in video while accepting bribe. Later, 14 cops were chargesheeted under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
