In a suspected case of honour killing, the bodies of a young couple were found at Kotli Veran village here on Wednesday. While the boy's body was found hanging from a tree, the girl was found lying in a pool of blood at her house.

The deceased have been identified as Amarjeet Singh, 25, and Mandeep Kaur, 22. The villagers claimed that Amarjeet and Mandeep were having an affair and the girl's family members were against it as the boy was allegedly involved in various criminal cases and had remained in jail for many months.

Talking to HT, Randhir Singh, father of the deceased, said his son went to Mandeep's house around 11.30 pm after receiving a call from her and never came back.

"My son cannot commit suicide. I suspect that he has been killed by Mandeep's family. To make it look like a suicide, they must have hanged his body. It's likely that they also killed Mandeep with sharp-edged weapons,: claimed Randhir.

Mandeep's cousin Joban Singh, in his statement to police, said around 2 am when he returned from the fields after switching off the tube well, he was shocked to find Mandeep's body lying in a pool of blood.

Superintendent of police (investigation) Pardeep Malik, , Fatehgarh Churrian deputy superintendent of police Harpal Singh have started investigations.

SP Malik said on Wednesday morning police received information that some unidentified persons had murdered a girl at Kotli Veran village and subsequently a team was rushed to the spot. Later, cops found Amarjeet's body hanging from a tree just few meters away from Mandeep's house. "We have registered a case of murder against unidentified persons on the statement of Mandeep's family. We are working on various theories and have seized the mobile phones of Amarjeet and Mandeep," said the SP, adding that the postmortem reports were awaited.
