punjab Updated: Mar 05, 2013 23:11 IST

A boy and a girl, aged 22 and 20, respectively, hailing from Dhurkot Kalan village in the district reportedly committed suicide by hanging themselves from a tree at a Nathuwala Jadeed village farm on Tuesday.

The police have started investigation into the incident even as it is learnt that the victims were having an affair.

Nihal Singhwala deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Jaswinder Singh Gharu who reached the spot with a police party said the preliminary investigation reveals that the boy and girl were in a relationship.

They were found hanging from a tree on the farms of one Sukhmander Singh, police said. “Both belonged to same community and wanted to marry each other. They took the extreme step when they failed to convince their parents,” police added.

The father of the girl told police that as he had three sons he adopted his brother's daughter. “I was busy making arrangements for her marriage when the family came to know about the suicide. We called the local police immediately,” he added.

The police have sent the bodies for post mortem at Dr Mathura Dass Civil Hospital, Moga. The hospital staff have sent viscera to Chandigarh and Patiala for further examination.

“After post mortem, the bodies were handed over to respective families. A case has been registered under Section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPc),” said Jai Pal Singh, assistant sub-inspector at Ajitwal police station.
