An Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) worker and his landlord have been arrested on the charge of murdering their neighbour following a spat over playing of loud music. The victim was identified as Shashi Shekhar (38), a resident of Gajja Jain Colony in Sherpura area here.

AAP worker Amit Preet Singh and his landlord, Jaswinder Singh Jassi, were arrested and booked under sections 302 (murder) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code.

Additional deputy commissioner of police (ADCP city-2) Shailinder Singh said Amit Preet and Jassi were playing loud music late on Wednesday. Shekhar asked them to lower the volume, saying that it was disturbing his children. However, the accused entered into a scuffle with him and allegedly stabbed him in the chest with a sharp-edged weapon. The duo then fled from the spot.

Kumar Naushad, the victim’s father, and other residents rushed Shekhar to hospital, where he was declared dead.

The ADCP added that the police arrested the accused a few hours after the crime and recovered the murder weapon from their possession. Cops also recovered Amit Preet’s AAP identity card from his room.

When contacted, Ahbab Singh Grewal, district convener, AAP, said Amit Preet was not a party member.

According to the police, Jassi is already facing trial in two cases of vehicle lifting and assault. He runs an eatery in Field Gunj area and Amit Preet is his employee. Jassi had an enmity with Shekhar and used to harass his family, the police added.
