After battling for life for 20 days, Barnala girl Harpreet Kaur (24), who was attacked with acid on the day of her marriage in a beauty salon here, succumbed to injuries at the National Burn Centre, Mumbai, on Friday morning.

Doctors attending to the victim, who was airlifted to Mumbai from Ludhiana on December 12, informed the family about her death around 7.30am.

"The doctors had told us two days ago that her condition was critical since some of her vital organs had failed," the victim's mother, Davinder Kaur, told Hindustan Times from Mumbai. Harpreet was attacked in Sarabha Nagar here on December 7 at 8:40am, when the 'baraat' was about to leave from Doraha (Ludhiana). She had suffered more than 50% burns.

The 'vengeful' acid attack was allegedly orchestrated by Amitpal Kaur (30) alias Dimpy alias Pari of Patiala, ex-wife of Taranjit Singh, elder brother of the victim's fiancé, Harpreet Singh. The police had arrested all six accused, including Amitpal, on December 9.

Meanwhile, a team of police officers from Ludhiana, led by inspector Harbhajan Singh, has left for Mumbai to bring the body back to her native place in Barnala. The post-mortem has been conducted in Mumbai, the victim's mother said.

The Ludhiana police, who had shifted Harpreet to Mumbai as the burn centre there had better facilities to deal with such cases, said Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) would be added to the FIR (first information report) in view of the victim's death. The FIR registered on December 7 already includes sections 326-B (causing injury by acid), 307 (attempt to murder) and 120-B) (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC.
