The canteen run by the children with special needs at Suvidha Centre in Mini Secretariat completed six months on Monday.

The district administration had allotted one-year contract of canteen named ‘Sashakt’.

The aim of the facility is to empower children with special needs and also give them an avenue to become independent by learning to cook.

Deputy commissioner Ravi Bhagat, accompanied by additional deputy commissioner (development) Apneet Riyat, on Monday visited the canteen and congratulated the team as well as the children running it successfully. They tasted the dishes prepared by the students.

Bhagat said that an organisation named SKOCH was so impressed with this initiative that they have decided to confer ‘Order of Merit’ on Dr Neelam Sodhi, who has been supervising the running of this canteen.

This award will be conferred at a function in Hyderabad on September 8. The contract of this canteen was given through open auction every year, but this time, as very few people showed interest, former additional deputy commissioner (development) Supreet Singh Gulati, had decided to give it free of cost to children with special needs.

Hence, three local NGO’s, namely Aashirwad, Nirdosh and Ekjot, agreed to run it and the children with special needs took charge of it. The children are operating this canteen from 10am to 2pm daily.

Bhagat informed that initially this canteen has been provided to these children for a period of one year and for the last six months, they have been running it successfully.

The land was provided by the district administration, while the required equipment such as racks and refrigerator were provided by Bonn Bread and Coca Cola. This canteen is running as a vocational training centre by these NGOs. Bhagat urged other companies as well as NGO’s to come forward for this noble cause and said that if they show interest, more such canteens would be started in the city.

The children as well as their teachers were also awarded with a token of love and appreciation by DC and ADC (D).
