Harassed by repeated rape by her paramour, who threatened to make their relationship public and bringing her disgrace, a 17-year-old girl allegedly immolated herself after pouring kerosene on herself in Hargobind Nagar on Friday.
The victim, who suffered 70% burns, was rushed to Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH), where her condition is stated to be critical.
The accused has been identified as Karan, 22, a resident of Tibba Road. He is at large.
Inspector Balwinder Singh, station house officer (SHO), at Division Number 6 police station, said the victim was a school dropout, while the accused ran a grocery shop at Tibba Road.
In her statement before the executive magistrate, the victim stated that she met Karan when he lived near her house in Hargobind Nagar. They soon developed an affair and Karan established physical relations with her after promising to marry her. Later, he, along with his family, shifted to Tibba Road.
When she later refused to give consent to their physical relationship, Karan started blackmailing her of defaming her by making the affair public if she did not continue to meet his physical needs, she alleged.
Unable to accept the sexual abuse anymore, she locked herself in her room on Friday and set herself afire after pouring kerosene. On hearing her screams, her parents rushed to her aid, doused the flames and rushed her to CMCH.
Acting on her statement, the Division Number 6 police have registered a case under sections 306/511 (abetment to suicide) and 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and sections 3 and 4 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences against the accused. The SHO said the police had launched a manhunt to arrest the accused.
