Ludhiana police commissioner RN Dhoke on Wednesday dismissed assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Gurkewal Singh, who was arrested on May 5 along with a head constable and their four accomplices for robbing a private firm employee of Rs 20 lakh last month.
This was the fourth time in four years that the ASI, who was deputed at the Model Town police station, was booked in a criminal case in Punjab. The previous cases relate to corruption, assault and criminal intimidation (see box).
“ASI Gurkewal Singh is indulging in various criminal activities by misusing his official status. After applying my independent mind, I, being the competent authority, have decided that it is not at all desirable to retain the ASI in service at public expense. His retention and continuation in service may be detrimental to the interest of the state as well as the general public,” states the dismissal order issued by the commissioner.

- October 10, 2014: Booked in a corruption case in Ludhiana
- June 18, 2014: Booked for causing hurt and wrongful restraint in Barnala
The ASI was suspended with immediate effect and a departmental inquiry initiated against him after he was arrested. “The investigations revealed the ASI was the prime accused and has (criminal) background. This could not be taken lightly,” said Dhoke.
The dismissal order also states that the penalty of dismissal from service is very harsh and oppressive for a public servant, but no sympathy can outweigh the consideration of public interest.
Gurkewal Singh, along with his accomplices, used to stop their target on the pretext of checking and rob them of cash and valuables. On April 29, they robbed Jaideep Singh, manager of a private company, of Rs 20 lakh at his house. The accused also slapped Jaideep when he resisted. Another member of the gang, Nirmal, was known to Jaideep and had prior information of the cash kept at his house. Besides the ASI and head constable Sarabjit Singh, their four aides were arrested.
Hawala link being probed
Nirmal is also involved in illegal transaction of cash (hawala racket). He was arrested one year ago with unaccounted money worth Rs 61 lakh. Police suspect the money robbed on April 29 was also hawala money. Dhoke said they are probing this angle.
