Inspector general of police (traffic) Sharad Satya Chouhan on Tuesday claimed that some officers of Ludhiana police commissionerate had hatched a conspiracy against him to defame him.

Openly warning such officials without taking any names IG at a press conference here, the IG said that he would not spare the erring officials at any cost and would take them to task. He also demanded a probe by an independent agency into the whole affair.

IG Chouhan's reaction came in the wake of reports in section of media about the arrest of two police officials in the case of abduction and robbing of an employee of a Mumbai-based jeweller.
Slamming the police officers in connection with the said case, the IG alleged that officials concerned had destroyed evidence to shield the main culprit and dragged in his name unnecessarily to defame him by issuing statements that arrested ASI Amar Singh and head constable Rajinder Singh were posted in the office of the IG traffic.

"I want to tell officers of Ludhiana police commissionerate that the ASI and head constable are not attached with the IG (traffic), that is me. If those attached with me are involved in crime, then I would say book me too in the case," said IG Chouhan.

"The arrested ASI and head constable might have been attached with my predecessors, but not me. It is very disappointing and unfortunate and it has disturbed my family too. My cell phone has been flooded with calls from people, asking what wrong has happened in my office. When I came to know about the whole situation, I have talked to my superiors. They agreed that I should take up the matter since what gad appeared in media was courtesy Ludhiana police officials," the IG said.
The IG said that he would file a complaint with the department against officials who had allegedly tried to malign his name and also file defamation suit against them.

"I talked to Ludhiana police commissioner Ishwar Singh on the issue. He clarified that police had not given the name of any officer in the press release in the robbery case. But I wish to ask that if the police commissioner does not want to reveal anything except information given in the press note, why have his juniors exceeded their limits and defamed me," he added.
