A farmer has died after a group of people allegedly assaulted him with iron rods at Mundian Kalan village on the Ludhiana-Chandigarh highway, police said.

One of the accused has been arrested, they added.

Jarnail Singh, a 43-year-old resident of Uchhi Mangli village, was heading home after supplying cattle fodder to dairy farms when his tractor trolley collided with a jeep near Vardhman Training Centre.

Jarnail’s cousin, Charan Singh, who was injured in the incident, told the police that after the collision, four people got down from the jeep and hit them “on our head”.

He said Jarnail died on the spot and the accused allegedly threw the body in nearby bushes before fleeing, leaving their jeep behind.

The family of the deceased soon reached the spot and held a protest demonstration to demand the arrest of all the accused.

Police have also seized the tractor trolley and the jeep and begun a probe.
