Kamaljeet Singh Karwal, an independent councillor from Ward No 45 here, will join the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Sunday in the presence of SAD president and deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal.

He was the right hand of the SAD rebel and independent MLA Simarjit Singh Bains, who had also contested the Lok Sabha election in 2014.

Karwal was elected as councillor from Ward No 45 in the 2012 Ludhiana MC elections and had also been elected as councillor from another ward in 2007. He supported the Bains Brothers -- Simarjit Singh and Balwinder Singh -- during the Vidhan Sabha elections in 2012.

He also supported Simarjit in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.

Talking to HT, Karwal said, "It is happening as per the wishes of god. Everything happens by Almighty's will and the events are taking their own course."

He failed to give a reason for leaving the Bains group saying he wanted to contribute in development work and it was possible only by joining the ruling party.

In 2009, Bains and Karwal had allegedly beaten then tehsildar GS Benipal. An attempt-to-murder case against Karwal, Bains and others is pending with the CBI since July 2014.

It is learnt that the political adviser to the CM, Maheshinder Singh Grewal, had convinced the deputy CM to take Karwal into the SAD. Grewal said, "Karwal, along with his younger brother, had repeatedly approached me, expressing the desire to join the SAD. Hence, I forwarded his request to the party high command."
