Debt-ridden 35-year-old man committed suicide by hanging self from a ceiling fan at his rented accommodation in Makkar colony, Giaspura, on Wednesday night.

The Focal Point police had registered a case under section 306 (abetment to suicide) of the Indian Penal Code against Vishwanath of same colony, following the statement of the deceased wife.

The deceased has been identified as Ranjan Lal. He was a labourer. Lal hanged himself from a ceiling fan on Wednesday night and on Thursday morning, his landlord saw his body hanging.

On being informed, the cops reached the spot and initiated investigation in the case. The police sent the body to civil hospital for post-mortem.

Incharge of police post Sherpur assistant sub-inspector Mukesh Kumar said the deceased used to run a chit fund scheme and several people have invested money with him. He incurred a loss in the scheme. Vishwanath was pressurising Lal and was demanding his money back.

Succumbed to the pressure, Lal hanged himself. Kumar said the police launched a manhunt for the arrest of the accused.
