Suspecting his estranged wife of infidelity, a local scrap dealer stabbed her 14 times in full public view on Monday at GMT Colony in Basti Jodhewal area here.

Police got there and arrested accused Kamal Kumar of Kailash Nagar under Sections 397 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code. Injured Deepika (28) was moved into the Ludhaina Civil Hospital, where doctors referred her to Rajendra Hospital in Patiala.

Deepika told the police that Kamal and she were married for the past 10 years, and his doubting and quarrelsome nature had forced her to live separate. She made a statement that on Monday, Kamal had called to GMT Colony, saying he wanted to settle the issue, and when she had got there, he had pounced on her with a kitchen knife, with which he hit her 14 times, in the abdomen, chest, back, legs, and arms until bystanders caught him and called the police.

The police then moved her to hospital.

"The accused suspected that Deepika had an extramarital affair," inspector Harpal Singh, station house officer (SHO) of Basti Jodhewal, has confirmed.
