The police on Saturday arrested Shalu alias Badshah, the mastermind behind attack on grocery shop owner Sanjay Goyal on March 30 this year. The police arrested him from Dhandhari area and recovered an illegal pistol from his possession that is said to have been used in the crime.
The accused was at large since the incident and his two minor accomplices were arrested on May 12. During interrogation, the accused told police that he fled to Kapurthala and stayed there with his friends. He assumed that the matter had died down so he returned to Ludhiana.
Inspector Jatinderjit Singh, Focal Point SHO, said the police arrested the accused on a tip-off.
The accused told police that he was known to the family and was well aware that Sanjay Goyal used to carry cash while returning from his shop. So he hatched a conspiracy to loot him and involved two accomplices to commit the crime.
On March 30, they stopped Goyal near Focal Point area and opened fire on him. Goyal did not give up and drove his scooter, thus foiling the robbery bid. He sustained severe injuries and had to be hospitalised.
He had dialed the number of Goyal's wife and demanded a ransom of Rs 50,000. He told her that he got Rs 1 lakh to kill her husband but if she agrees to pay Rs 50,000, Goyal will not be killed. After the incident, the accused kept in touch with the Goyal's family and used to get information from them about the police activity. When the police arrested his accomplices, he had fled to evade arrest.
The SHO further added that the accused had procured the pistol from Uttar Pradesh and had shot at a labourer on March 26 just to test the weapon. The labourer had survived the attack.
