Tehbazari wing of municipal corporation (MC) here organised an anti-encroachment drive, in which 30 encroachments were removed at several city areas, including Ghumar Mandi, college road and cemetery road, on Tuesday.
The shopkeepers near the railway station staged a protest against the MC officials for removing the encroachments in their area. Some of the shopkeepers claimed that the officials used abusive language while during the drive.
Rohit Sahota, superintendent of police (SP), said the action was taken on the directions of Rishipal Singh, MC additional commissioner. The drive was conducted along with other MC officials.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Rajinder Bhandari visited the spot to settle down the matter.
The MC officials, however, have refuted the allegations levelled against them by the protesters and said no abusive language was used by any of their officials. They added that more such drives would be organised in the city.
