A resident of Kheri village in the district, wishing to settle abroad, was cheated of Rs 29 lakh by an NRI woman, who allegedly tied the knot with him despite being already married twice, and two others. The Sadar police have booked Canadian national Anita Kumari and her father Tarsem Lal for cheating Paramjit Singh, who paid the money with the hope of being taken abroad.

The father-daughter duo belongs to Rahimpur, Hoshiarpur. Complainant Paramjit said he had come in contact with Anita and her father in June 2010 though an advertisement in a vernacular newspaper. Anita promised him that she would take him to Canada and had demanded Rs 39 lakh from him for the purpose.

The complainant said the accused woman solemnised the bogus marriage with him, even as he paid Rs 29 lakh to her. When he applied for visa on the basis of marriage, his application was rejected. He came to know that the woman was already married twice.

Inspector Jatinderjit Singh, SHO, Sadar, said a case had been registered following investigation by the anti-human trafficking wing and a hunt for the woman was on.
