Gangster Gaurav Sharma alias Goru Bachcha, who is again on the run after killing an auto-rickshaw driver in Ludhiana on Thursday, has been openly “flaunting” his ties with Student Organisation of India (SOI), a unit of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD).
Huge hoardings and posters of Bachcha and SOI members, along with pictures of deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, revenue minister Bikram Majithia, SOI zonal president Meetpal Singh Dugri and other leaders have come up all over the city.
Interestingly, the hoardings and posters are also there at Atam Nagar Chowk, where the kin of deceased auto-rickshaw driver Vikrant Kumar staged a protest and blocked traffic on Friday protesting against the cold-blooded murder. The protesters raised slogans against the government alleging that since the accused had close ties with SAD leaders, the police were reluctant to arrest him.
When contacted, Meetpal Singh Dugri said Bachcha is not an SOI member. He said Jeevan Sekha was recently appointed president of SOI, Ludhiana unit, and Bachcha on two or three occasions had met Sekha through someone. After Sekha’s appointment, Bachcha and others printed posters with their pictures and those of SAD leaders expressing gratitude to the SAD high command for appointing Sekha as the district president of SOI. Dugri claimed that the posters were printed and pasted without Sekha’s knowledge. Though the hoardings, prominently positioned across the city, are easily visible, Dugri said he came to know of them only on Friday and had asked SOI volunteers to remove them.
Locals said the hoardings were put up almost two weeks ago. Interestingly, municipal corporation staff had removed other posters and hoardings from the roadside, but not the SOI hoardings.
Bachcha, along with his accomplices, allegedly gunned down a 30 year-old auto-rickshaw driver of Himmat Singh Nagar following a minor parking issue on Thursday evening. The accused pumped in two bullets into his body and also beat up his brother, who came to his rescue.
Vikrant was rushed to a private hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The Dugri police have registered a murder case against Bachcha, and his accomplices, Vipan of Ambedkar Nagar, Gurmeet Singh of Preet Nagar, Arjun of Satjot Nagar, Micky and three other unidentified people. Vipan is Bachcha’s maternal uncle.
Bachcha a school dropout
The 23-year-old Bachcha is a school dropout. His father, Bittu, runs an orchestra group and is a small-time singer. The police have found that Bachcha has relations with a dancer, who lives at Chandigarh Road. The accused also used to bully her for money. He was once member of the Sachin Mohini gang, but later formed his own gang. He is facing trial in several criminal cases, including murder, attempt to murder, kidnapping, loot, extortion and possessing illegal weapons. He was arrested by Nakodar Police three years ago following an encounter after which he remained in jail for months. Four months ago, the Goraya police arrested him for possessing illegal weapons. He got bail in the case two months ago.
