Police have booked unidentified people for allegedly looting a photo laboratory owner at Bharat Nagar Chowk here on Saturday after throwing chilli powder in his eyes.

Police said lab owner Chaman Lal Gupta had alleged the miscreants attacked him when he left his lab for his house at Sarabha Nagar at around 9.30pm on Saturday. As he opened the door of his car, some motorcycle-borne miscreants threw chilli powder in his eyes. When he fell down, the accused snatched his bag containing Rs 3 lakh cash, voter card, Aadhaar card, and other important documents, and fled from the spot.

After he raised the alarm, people gathered there and called the police, following which a division number 5 team reached the spot.

Station house officer inspector Dharampal said a case had been registered under Section 382 of the Indian Penal Code and investigation was on.

The incident has raised concerns over the security arrangements, as police had established checkpoints at various spots in the city ahead of the Republic Day celebrations on Sunday, and the crime scene was 500 m away from Guru Nanak Stadium, where the Republic Day programme was held. Besides, the chowk is a key spot which is manned by policemen round-the-clock.
