A 19-year-old youth has been arrested on the charge of raping a 14-year-old girl for the past one year. The victim, a resident of Vijay Nagar area near Manju Cinema, is two-month pregnant. The accused, Kamal Mehra, a neighbour of the victim, works in a factory.
The girl's father, said to be mentally ill, has been missing for the past year or so. The rape came to light when the victim's mother, who works as a domestic help, detected the pregnancy two days ago.
She claimed that the youth threatened her and her daughter and wanted the girl to go for an abortion.
The victim's mother revealed the matter to the owner of the house where she works and was told to contact Childline NGO, which is being run under the union ministry of women and child development.
Arvind Kumar Singh, the NGO's coordinator for Ludhiana district, said, "She asked me for help. I went to her house on Wednesday morning and listened to her complaint. Subsequently, I contacted the division number 6 police."
On Wednesday afternoon, the accused was brought to the division number 6 police station and questioned by station house officer (SHO) Anil Kumar. An FIR was lodged against Mehra under Section 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code in the evening.
Nilamberi Vijay Jagdale, additional deputy commissioner of police (ADCP-1), confirmed that the accused had been arrested.
