The Ludhiana zonal unit of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized 41.3 kg of heroin near Amritsar on Sunday.
The heroin was found in a car, which was being used to transport the contraband by trafficker Jagdeep Singh.
Jagdeep was arrested by the DRI officials under the NDPS Act. DRI officials said Jagdeep, who is a proclaimed offender, had jumped parole; he had been arrested for smuggling 13kg of heroin earlier. It is suspected that during his parole also, he was involved in smuggling of heroin.
According to the initial investigation, the heroin was smuggled from the Indo-Pakistan border, near Tarn Taran district. The seizure was the result of days of ground surveillance based on a tip-off.
DRI officials said that being the premier intelligence agency in customs matters, curbing drug trafficking is one of its top priorities and it was sensitising the customs field units on regular intervals.
In October last year, the DRI had seized 40kg of heroin near Ludhiana. It has recovered a total of 94kg of heroin in Punjab in the current financial year.
