Three unidentified persons assaulted a 20-year-old woman and her husband, both natives of Bihar, near the railway track in Salem Tabri area after the couple resisted their alleged attempt to rape the woman.

Inspector Gurnam Singh, SHO of railway police, said that the three had been booked for molestation and assault on Friday. Police were trying to identify and arrest the culprits, he added.

According to Sujeet, the husband of the woman who has since been admitted in Christian Medical College and Hospital for treatment of head injuries, said that he and his wife Shivani were returning to their rented accommodation in Luxmi Nagar area on late Thursday night after paying obeisance at a religious place when the assailants accosted them in Salem Tabri area.

Sujeet, who works in a local hosiery factory, claimed that as he and his wife resisted the attempt of the miscreants to sexually assault the woman, the trio beat them up. Shivani, who is into fourth month of pregnancy, fell down on the rail tracks after the assailants hit her in the head with a stone. They also beat up Sujeet, who received minor injuries in the process. The assailants fled when they saw passersby converging on the spot.

Police visited the crime spot on Friday and recovered the footwear and sash of the victim woman.
