Unidentified miscreants allegedly shot at a 40-year-old man after he, along with some residents of Noorwala village, entered a local government school to nab an alleged gang of robbers hiding there.

The bullet hit Tajinder Singh in the back and pierced through the right lung. He was rushed to Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), where his condition is stated to be out of danger.

According to locals, despite repeated complaints about robberies in the area, the police did not take any action, and consequently robberies had continued in the area.

Kanwaljit Singh, a resident of Noorwala village, said a gang had been active in the area for the past one week, and had committed several robberies.

He said on Wednesday night, they woke up to the sound of a gunshot, and realised that some miscreants were hiding in a local school. Meanwhile, many villagers got together and planned to enter the school to nab the troublemakers.

Kanwaljit said he entered the school with a torch, followed by his brother, Tajinder Singh, and other villagers. “As soon as we entered the school, we heard another gunshot and realised Tajinder had been hit. We rushed him to DMCH. Meanwhile, the miscreants managed to flee the spot taking advantage of the dark,” Kanwaljit alleged.
